What exactly are the benefits of massage or bodywork treatments?
Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can:
    •    Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
    •    Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
    •    Ease medication dependence.
    •    Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body's natural defense system.
    •    Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
    •    Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
    •    Improve the condition of the body's largest organ—the skin.
    •    Increase joint flexibility.
    •    Lessen depression and anxiety.
    •    Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
    •    Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
    •    Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.
    •    Reduce spasms and cramping.
    •    Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
    •    Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body's natural painkiller.
    •    Relieve migraine pain.
Can massage actually relieve depression and anxiety?
Yes, and here's why. Cortisol is the hormone your body needs for a fight-or-flight response, but when stressful events don't require you to fight or flee, it can build up in your system and create problems. Studies have shown that massage lowers cortisol levels by as much as 50% -- while also increasing levels of dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin. These are the natural chemicals your body produces to stabilize your mood and lower stress. Regular massage therapy makes it easier to slip into a more relaxed state, which helps you breathe easier and sleep better. So massage is as beneficial to your mental health as it is to your physical health.
What kind of massage is best for me?
We all have unique experiences and bodies and hence we also have unique health needs.  At Hummingbird Medicine we want to make sure that everyone's individual needs are met.  Will is trained in various forms of massage and will discuss this with you once he has heard your goals and health history. to personalize your treatment.
I've never had a massage before. What should I do to prepare?
The most important thing to keep in mind is that the massage is for your benefit. If questions arise during your session, the therapist can answer them for you. When you schedule your appointment, you'll want to tell us any preferences you have, like what massage type you like, if you know. Of course, if this is your first massage, how do you know your preferences? We will have recommendations on what to try and how to get started. Don’t worry, you are taken care of!
